SVP at St Marys
After many years of trying to start a Youth Conference we now have, with the help of the Head and RE staff, a very active conference. The conference started just over six years ago, with the blessing and encouragement of Mr Paul Heitzman, the then new Head, together with Mr Stan Webster, head of RE and his team.
There have been many third world projects completed, just to name a few: goat project; buying a small herd of cattle for villages in India. One major fund raising event was to provide university education for five years for six orphans of the tsunami disaster.
On the home front they provide over ninety food hampers to needy families in the Wallasey area, they also provide support for the Christmas party, held in the dining hall, for the elderly and housebound of the area. The younger Vincentions visit a number of housbound people, they deliver plants that they have grown themselves and this happens a number of times during the year.
Where does the funding come from you ask: cake sales, home made Easter / Mother's & Father;'s day cards, sold at St Alban's Parish - the lads sold over £100 worth in one weekend. The Wirral Coastal Walk also brings extra funding, most of the RE team complete the walk, they do car boot sales, etc., etc.
It has been a pleasure and privilege to have helped to get St Mary's SVP up and running, it would not have been possible without the input and devotion of the RE team and most important the interest and hard work shown by the students, may it continue to flourish.
Starting the new project in September with the theme being 'Nigeria via Fr Moses' (see 'Parish Project' page on this site). Stan Webster and three ex-students are planning to visit the village of Fr Moses. The students are on their way to University!
Yours in St Vincent de Paul and Blessed Fredrick Ozanam
