Edward Doyle 1938-1941
EDWARD DOYLE: Son of James & Mary Doyle (Miles) born in Birkenhead on 7th July 1910. Educated at St Hugh's, Birkenhead; Ushaw 1924-30 & English College, Rome 1930-37 (S.T.L., Ph.L). Ordained by Cardinal Marchetti-Selvaggiani at Lateran on 19th December 1936 and was Bishop's Secretary (Moriarty) 1937-40. Curate: St Alban's, Liscard 1940-41. Taught Philosophy at Ushaw 1941-46. Curate: St Wilfrid's, Northwich 1946-50. PP: St Christopher's, Romiley 1950-59; St Joseph's, Birkenhead 1959-75.
Was undoubtedly possessed of a very fine brain shown in his exam results at the Gregorian University in Rome. The rector of the English College - Mgr Godfrey - wanted him to take his D.D. but Bishop Moriarty would not hear of it. He disliked being Secretary as he wanted to do pastoral work. He died on 26th June 1975 and is buried at Landican, Birkenhead.
